About Travelers Car Insurance

Travelers has been in the property casualty insurance business for more than 165 years and sold its first policy for just two cents. Today, Travelers has 30,000 employees serving customers for personal, business and specialty insurance.

Travelers sells car insurance with plenty of add-ons to customize your policy, such as:

  • Gap Insurance. If your car is totaled due to a problem covered by your policy, this pays the difference between what you owe on your loan or lease and the depreciated value of your car.
  • Roadside assistance. If you are stranded on the side of the road, this covers services such as towing, changing a flat tire, refueling, locksmith and jump-starting a dead battery.
  • Rental reimbursement auto insurance. This pays for a rental car or other transportation costs (like subway fare) if you cannot drive your car due to a problem covered by your policy.
  • Accident forgiveness. If you purchase a Responsible Driver Plan, you will be forgiven for one accident and one minor violation over a specified period, meaning your rates will not go up.
  • New car replacement insurance. If your new car is totaled due to an accident covered by your policy, you'll get a brand new car of the same make and model.
  • Rideshare insurance. Car owners in Colorado and Illinois who drive for a rideshare service like Uber or Lyft can add this endorsement that covers you when you turn on the app, but ends when you connect with a passenger.

A Brief History of Travelers Insurance

Travelers initially began as two separate companies: Travelers and the St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Co. The first Travelers policy was sold in 1864 for two cents. In 1855, St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Co. paid its first claim when a fire spread from a bakery to a row of offices.

Fast forward to 2004 and the two companies merged to create The St. Paul Travelers Companies, Inc. In 2007, the company changed its name to The Travelers Companies.

In 2019, Travelers partnered with Hover to implement 3-D modeling technology in its claims process. For example, the models can gather precise measurements of a building's exterior, windows and siding. This technology reduces the need to walk around potentially dangerous properties and can help speed up the claims process.

Travelers Insurance Charitable Causes

Travelers has donated more than $225 million over the past decade in its communities. Some of the common causes the company supports includes:

  • Higher education initiatives
  • Arts and culture
  • Thriving neighborhoods
  • Disaster relief
  • Health and social services
  • Civic and public affairs
  • K-12 initiatives

More than $5.5 million was provided toward Covid-19 relief in 2020 to help assist families, small businesses and communities in the U.S., United King and the Republic of Ireland.

The rate also includes collision and comprehensive with a $500 deductible.
