[WIN10] Could not install HRBlock 2018 tax program on Win 10 versions

HRBlock 2018 tax software would not install on Win 10 versions 1803 and 1809 despite trying to do so multiple times and despite spending a couple of hours on hold and talking with HRBlock technical assistance folk this weekend.

Disabled Win Defender and MBAM, and almost all Win 10 security settings, but still couldn't get HRBlock 2018 program to install. Specific problem was a windows error code 1513 (iirc). The HRBlock program could not create a folder in the programs directory of the C drive.

Finally tried to install the tax prep program on version 1709 of Win 10 and it installed fine.

Anyone else experience this? Any explanation for why it occurred or what the "fix" is?

[The problem happened with HRBlock software purchased from Amazon and a second version of the program downloaded directly from HRBlock. Same windows error code with each one...]

Not enough to go on.

Look in the Event Logs for more information.

Sounds like a permissions problem. Right-click on the installer and Run as Adminstrator.

Make sure to also right click the HRBlock 2018 installer, choose the Properties tab, and then click "Unblock" and hit apply. Now try to right click on the installer and "Run as Administrator".

That was one of several suggestions from the knowledgeable HRBlock technical support person. We tried running the installer as admin. That didn't help.

We checked permissions. That was suggested by both the tech person and a google hit on a microsoft help page, but I was already running as an admin and already had full permissions in the Programs folder. The MSFT help page was not on HRBlock software. It was about a different program that threw the same error code and had the same problem of the program not being able to create a folder in the Programs folder in Windows.

Logs are long gone as I've re-imaged 1709 over the 1809 install. I didn't image 1809 prior to doing so as 1809 wasn't allowing the program to install and saw no reason to save an image of it at that time.

The strange thing is that the HRBlock 2018 software installed fine in W10 v1709. Googling the problem with respect to v.1809 didn't come up with a solution that worked.

One thing to note is that both the Amazon HRBlock 2018 program and the one directly from HRBlock were downloaded software. Not from a DVD disk. They were both "Deluxe version + State" if anyone is curious.

This is the only program that I've had problems installing on any version of Windows 10. At this time I don't know if it is a Windows problem or an HRBlock problem.

Thanks Dustyn. If I get a chance to reinstall W10 v1809 on a different hard drive I'll try the "unblock" suggestion to see what happens.

Right now I'm going to use HRBlock 2018 on the 1709 install to get our taxes done and maybe get a small refund if we get lucky. Still waiting on some tax info forms to get that done.

My next step would be to run Sysinternals Process Monitor when installing on 1809.

It has nice filtering features that will allow you to narrow down what was running at the time, as well as setting "watch" filters.

Set up Process Monitor and let it run continuously. There is a logging feature. Turn it on by clicking on File > Backing Files.... There will be two options: Use virtual memory (which is the default), and Use file named:.

Click on the Browse button (the one with 3 dots) and it will take you to the folder where Process Monitor is installed. Enter a file name. It will automatically be given an extension of .PML. Click Save.

When Process Monitor is restarted, check that File > Capture Events is checked. It will log everything within the filter criteria that has been set up (default filters are fine for now).

Anyone with Process Monitor will be able to use it to open the .PML file and view it as if it were on their system.

Then this might be one of those terribly written programs where you need to actually be logged in as the Administrator to install. If that doesn't work, logged in and Run As Administrator normally do the trick.

I would install using the hidden administrator account on Windows 10. I have to do this on my HP desktop to install a driver that windows 10 blocks. Here is how to enable the hidden admin account. 1. Right click command prompt and click run as administrator.

2. Click yes on UAC prompt

3. Run this command Net user administrator /active:yes

4. Log out of your username

5. Log on using the admin account.

6. Try to install the software.

I had a program do that once so I made a folder with the name it was looking for in the place it was looking for (Programs x86 in my case). Went in into Properties of the folder and made sure it had read/write priviledges. The program installed after that. Plus 1 what others said about creating an Admin acct and using that. Process Monitor can help too.
Edit: I meant activating the hidden Admin acct, not creating an Admin account in User Accounts control panel. Apologies for any confusion.

Creating an admin account in Windows 10 means nothing since it will still block you when Microsoft thinks it's right and your wrong. You have to enable the built in hidden admin account in order to have full control of Windows 10 and to override Microsoft when it is blocking legitimate program's and drivers on your machine.

UPDATE:

Just tried to install HRBlock Basic 2018 on Win 10 v1809 using an HRBlock CD to install the program rather than either of the software downloads of the Deluxe version that would not install.

The Basic version installed fine in Win10 v1809. Have to believe now that the problem may have been in either the Deluxe version or in the software download versions received from Amazon and from HRBlock that wouldn't install.

Still don't know why this happened, but nice to have a workaround solution for this year's taxes.

I understand you are talking about W10.
I installed and ran 2018 Deluxe Version with one State on W7-64 without an issue a month ago.
It went through I believe 3 updates as well. Program bought through H&R Block yearly CD that was sent to me.
Hope you find out why.....

Detailed instructions were given above on how to use Process Monitor to troubleshoot the issue.

Haven't seen any results posted.

Apologies for not being clear, but that was what I meant, to use the hidden Admin acct. Windows or Linux, I always create an Administrator/Root account. In Windows (8.1/10) I always activate the F8 safe mode key too.("BCDEdit /SET "{Current}" BootMenuPolicy Legacy" or "bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy") Using the regular Admin acct or making a Standard user an admin works for many things but doesn't have all the priviledges of the hidden Admin acct, as many here already know.
